Sorry. Some things are just a mystery. I put a Feisty disc into a new P4 
box and it worked straight away, except for on board sound. So I put an 
old Soundblaster card in and it worked so well I could even use 
Rhythmbox, Audacity and Skype all at the same time with no audio 
conflicts. Then I re-calibrated the on board sound, removed the 
Soundblaster and got sound but only on one programme at a time. 
Otherwise resource conflicts. As the Americans say, "Go figure."
