My Ubuntu 9.04 system is set to 'Autodetect' which seems to work nicely here, where I disabled onboard sound in favour of my Aureon sound card - I also have numerous OSS, Alsa, PulseAudio and specific sound card options available to me as well at this option. Of course that doesn't explain why yours broke, but it might get you up and running again if you have it available and haven't already tried it.
