I used a 6BTV for several years. The 80 meter bandwidth is pretty narrow and
finding the resonant point of the antenna can be bit of a task with a tube
rig as well as a solid state one. The tube rigs have to be constantly
retuned. The solid state ones cut back with SWR. You think you have found
the point of lowest SWR and you actually have lost power from the radio thus
changing the SET point of the meter. I have found that using a RX noise
bridge the easiest way to find where an antenna is resonant. You can later
check it with RF from your transmitter when you have the antenna in the ball
park. Also keep in mind that the resonant point of a vertical is not 50 ohms
but actually around 30. You wont get a true 1.0 to 1 SWR. Also if you
install radials this will cause a difference in the SWR because the input
resistance will change as the antenna becomes more efficient. Seasonal soil
moisture conditions will also cause changes. This stuff drove me crazy when
I was using verticals.
