I would say, however, if you are using the R8 for ham reception, its not that bad. I guess they go for that much because there ain't many of them out there. Ebay is not the only source for equipment. Try looking to many of the ham only sale listings you find on-line as well. Check on QRZ.com and others. A lot of guys shun ebay and list their items for sale elsewhere. David

I, myself purchased a brand new R8 when they came out and then, contrary to opinion,... and because I'm a bit hardheaded, ..ordered the MS8. Well the opinions were right,...and it was not a very good speaker. I sent it back to Universal Radio for credit. An MS4 sounds much better and thats what I used for the time I owned mine. Even better for broadcast listening is a powered computer speaker. In addition, the internal speaker sounds pretty darn good. OK, having said all that, it would be nice, from a collector point of view, to have the infamous MS8 sitting next to the world beater R8 or its able successors the R8A and R8B. Hope you find one!! But if you do, use both the MS8 and the internal speaker together for best results.
