You must have AMBE encoding to work D-STAR, the cheapest way to do that is with a device using the DVSI AMBE 2XXX chip. Software only licenses cost about $100K and reverse engineering would violate patents. The DV Dongle is a cost effective way to get on the D-STAR network over the Internet. -- John, K7VE
