Well that ends that... It looks like the patent for AMBE was applied for in 1997 and granted in 2001 (http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT6199037).
This means we need to wait for either 9 or 13 years depending on when it actually expires, and I don't know enough about patent law to know if they could extend or renew it beyond that...
