But if there is a telephone jack on the back of the computer, then there
IS an internal modem in there and it can cause complications even if it is
broken.

By "Remote access" do you mean you set up the TCP/IP control panel
with Earthlink's DNS addresses? What PPP dialer does the computer have?
Open Transport PPP or MacPPP or FreePPP? These dialers come
with control panels that must be configured to connect to the modem
port.

What modem related control panels do you have? Open them and see if
any of them give you the option to select "Use external modem"
These shared printer & modem port powerbooks are an experience
in computer hell until you get used to their idiosyncrisys (I bought a
Duo Mini-dock on ebay that provides separate printer and
modem ports to ease the fustration).
