By 'remote access' I hope you don't mean Apple Remote Access, that is not
intended to be able to dial an ISP. It's supposed to dial another Mac.
Leave the Teleport control panel installed because it has a nice "Reset"
button which can reset the modem if needed. If you have the GV fax
software installed you _must_ set it to not listen for incoming calls.
This gives exactly the error you are reporting. I believe that AppleTalk
must also be turned off (can be done from the Chooser).
I'd recommend installing FreePPP and OpenTransport (not OpenTransport PPP,
because the default installation has a broken Global Village modem
script). That combination is very easy to get going. In the PPP Config
control panel you will select the "Modem/Printer" port, which after you
click on the drop-down list will be the only choice.
