I don't know about particular compatibility with the GV modem. But my
'net access got a LOT better when I retired FreePPP et. al. for
AppleRemoteAccess. 1) I always get stable connections. 2) It is
LocationManager-aware, so I can set multiple dialup numbers. 3) I was
having compatibility problems with FreePPP. Not sure now, but maybe the
problem was FreePPP Menu and OS9. Finally, 4) ARA works nicely, easy to
config/understand/monitor (right now, fr'instance).
Further, I did not have to turn off AppleTalk, either under FreePPP or
ARA. I do it for battery conservation purposes in my "airplane
location" but turning it back on is problematic... it wants to be told
to use my Ethercard instead of the printer port, so a couple of steps
that are a nuisance.
Apple's remote access used to be sucko; Rockport did us users a big
service with FreePPP. But I don't think they are expecting new users
now that ARA & OpenTransport are up to speed.
