Laurent, I had exactly the same bizarre symptoms from a VST new
battery for my Duo 2300c that drove me mad for a month. MCE shipped
me a replacement battery that hasn't given me any problems ever since.

The voltage should be around 12v. By the way, the damaged battery
gave me all sorts of wrong readings: the shareware myBattery said one
thing, while a borrowed voltmeter said just the opposite.

As far as I know you can use type IV batteries in any Duo
280-280c-2300c, provided they have been engineered to the machine in
question. In a nutshell, if BTI says their type IV battery works on a
Duo 280c, take their word for it. It does not imply all type IV
batteries from any manufacturer work on a Duo 280c: there can be
issues with firmware and size not fitting the 280c.
