I dunno, but here is my perhaps rather unimformed opinion on that project.
Did you consider using a 740? The 740 has no pins for backside cache,
but has pins for compatability with older 60x PPC processors. The new 750
processors with on die chache have some pins that eliminate compatability
with older 60x PPCs.
Bus speeds - sure it would only have a 33MHz bus speed, but what were you
expecting?
incompatible power supply issues - while I do not know the core voltage
that a 740 would use I have a voltage adaptor for an old Pentium MMX and
this voltage adaptor uses about a dozen or so SMD capacitors, two small
ICs, and about a half a dozen other SMD components.
Of course I have thought of some other rather nasty problems. The 740 I
believe, only comes in a BGA package, which would be impossible to solder
without specialized equipment. A lack of backside cache would make the
740 slower than a 750 of the same speed. I have no idea what the highest
bus multiplier that the 740 can use, but it certainly would be no more
than 8x which would only allow for the 740 to run at 266MHz.
Of course dropping the issue with the Duo, what I think that would be sort
of bizzare would be to get an old Apple Network Server 500 to boot the
MacOS from ROM. I have an old dead 7500 MB and the Apple Network Server
has a ROM slot. Another bizzare project would be to use the PDS slot on a
7100 or an 8100 and the processor slot on a 7[3,5]00 and maybe an old G3
upgrade board and make a FrankenMac with PCI and NuBus slots. I have been
tempted to mount a CUDA chip on an ISA card and then I would have a PC
with ADB, of course drivers would be a pain. I would also like to see
someone mount a 620(the 64 bit PPC processor) on a PCI Mac processor slot
and get that to work.
