:) Well, that's a major stretch (being macho) -- but, yes, I do surface
mount work. However, there's a huge difference between doing a
capacitor, fuse or serial resistor pack than a CPU -- I've done a lot of
microsurgery -- and have only done one massive chip (SCSI controller).
That was a challenge! I don't think I'll ever want to do another major
chip by hand, even with the rig we built from the microscope stage for
positioning, the vacuum positioner, etc. The big boys with the neat
forced air heat assemblies (cool soldering technic) are much more
capable. (you can build your own rigs, Mad Dog -- one of my favorite
shops is www.smallparts.com)
I like the idea of keeping a list of display manufacturers and part
numbers handy. I think one of the dedicated websites (Ralph?) would be a
great place for a parts matrix. However, I think we might be surprised
to get a match that's cheaper than current supplies. Nonetheless, it'd
be useful.
