Work visas should be pesky for your employer, not you! =)
I lived/worked in the UK & Germany in 97/98.
My family (wife & two kids) enjoyed it more than I did since i was
too busy working my butt off to really relax and enjoy the benefits
of working abroad. Plus my first and last three months I was
'commuting' between the US & UK.
You will have a great time, just make sure you take the time to see
some sights.
