The Power Of Our Limits
Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and
teach you what you shall say. —Exodus 4:12

Moses, on the
occasion of his call by God, made excuses. "O my Lord, I am not eloquent,
neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of
speech and slow of tongue" (Exodus 4:10).
The
wording suggests that Moses had a speech impediment—perhaps he stuttered. But
the Lord said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes the mute,
the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?" (v.11).
Our
impairments, our disabilities, our handicaps are not accidents; they are
God-designed. He uses every one of our flaws for His own glory. God's way of
dealing with what we call "limitations" is not to remove them but to
endow them with strength and use them for good.
In the
New Testament, Paul the apostle referred to an unspecified "thorn in the
flesh" that he repeatedly asked the Lord to take from him (2 Corinthians
12:7-8). But God said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is
made perfect in weakness" (v.9).
Paul even
learned to "take pleasure" in his troubles. "Most gladly I will
rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon
me," he said (v.9). "For when I am weak, then I am strong"

Kuasa Keterbatasan
Oleh sebab itu, pergilah, Aku akan menyertai lidahmu dan mengajar engkau,
apa yang harus kaukatakan (Keluaran 4:12)

Musa mencari-cari alasan
pada saat ia dipanggil oleh Allah. “Ah, Tuhan, aku ini tidak pandai bicara,
dahulu pun tidak dan sejak Engkau berfirman kepada hamba-Mu pun tidak, sebab
aku berat mulut dan berat lidah” (Keluaran 4:10).
Dari pernyataan itu, Musa sepertinya
memiliki kesulitan berbicara—barangkali ia gagap. Akan tetapi Tuhan berfirman kepadanya, “Siapakah
yang membuat lidah manusia, siapakah yang membuat orang bisu atau tuli,
membuat orang melihat atau buta; bukankah Aku, yakni Tuhan?” (ayat 11).
Kecacatan, ketidakmampuan,
kekurangan fisik kita bukanlah suatu kecelakaan. Semuanya itu merupakan
rancangan Allah. Dia menggunakan setiap ketidaksempurnaan kita untuk
kemuliaan-Nya. Cara Allah mengatasi sesuatu yang kita sebut “keterbatasan”
adalah tidak dengan menghilangkannya, namun memberkatinya dengan kekuatan
serta menggunakannya untuk kebaikan.
Di dalam kitab Perjanjian Baru,
Rasul Paulus menyebutkan “duri di dalam daging” yang tak terdefinisikan. Ia
telah berulangkali meminta kepada Tuhan untuk mengambilnya (2 Korintus
12:7,8). Akan tetapi Allah justru berkata, “Cukuplah kasih karunia-Ku bagimu,
sebab justru dalam kelemahanlah kuasa-Ku menjadi sempurna” (ayat 9).
Rasul Paulus bahkan telah belajar untuk “menikmati”
kesulitan-kesulitan yang ia hadapi. “Sebab itu terlebih suka aku bermegah
atas kelemahanku, supaya kuasa Kristus turun menaungi aku,” demikian katanya
(ayat 9). “Sebab jika aku lemah, maka aku kuat” (ayat 10) —DHR
