Wise Behavior
David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely.
. . . And he was accepted in the sight of all the people. —1 Samuel 18:5

Four times in 1
Samuel 18, the writer tells us that David "behaved wisely"
(vv.5,14,15,30). In fact, he behaved "more wisely than all the servants of
Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed" (v.30).
The
phrase "highly esteemed" suggests an unusual respect. David was
honored by all the people, but more significantly he was highly respected by
those in Saul's court who were impressed by his noble character.
As
Christians come to know Jesus through obedience to His Word, they will begin to
display qualities of character that set them apart from others, for true wisdom
is to live like Christ. It is more than common sense; it is uncommon behavior.
James
said, "The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and
without hypocrisy" (3:17). This gracious way of making our way through the
world can come only "from above."
David's
experience can be our experience. God's promise to him is also true for
believers today. He said, "I will instruct you [cause you to be wise] and
teach you in the way you should go" (Psalm 32:8).

Berlaku Bijaksana
Daud maju berperang ke mana juga Saul menyuruhnya dan dia berlaku bijaksana
…. Hal ini dipandang baik oleh seluruh rakyat (1 Samuel 18:5 Alkitab versi King James)

Sebanyak empat kali di dalam
1 Samuel 18, penulis kitab ini mengatakan bahwa Daud “berlaku bijaksana”
(lihat ayat 5,14,15,30). Kenyataannya, “Daud bersikap lebih bijaksana dari
semua pegawai Saul, sehingga namanya menjadi sangat masyhur” (ayat 30).
Frasa “sangat
masyhur” menggambarkan sebuah penghormatan yang tidak biasa. Daud sangat
dihormati oleh semua orang, akan tetapi yang lebih tepat, ia sangat dihormati
di kalangan pegawai Saul yang sangat terpesona oleh karakter Daud yang
berwibawa.
Ketika orang
kristiani mulai mengenal Yesus dengan menaati perintah-Nya, mereka akan mulai
menampakkan kualitas karakter yang akan membedakan mereka dari orang-orang
lain. Karena hikmat yang murni adalah hidup seperti Kristus. Hal ini lebih
dari sekadar kepintaran biasa; ini adalah perilaku yang tidak biasa.
Yakobus
berkata, “Tetapi hikmat yang dari atas adalah pertama-tama murni, selanjutnya
pendamai, peramah, penurut, penuh belas kasihan, dan buah-buah yang baik,
tidak memihak dan tidak munafik” (3:17).
Pengalaman Daud
di masa lalu dapat juga menjadi pengalaman kita pada masa kini. Janji Allah
kepadanya juga merupakan janji Allah kepada orang-orang percaya pada zaman
ini. Ia berkata demikian, “Aku hendak mengajar [agar engkau berlaku
bijaksana] dan menunjukkan kepadamu jalan yang harus kautempuh” (Mazmur
32:8).
