After years of being annoyed at the process of opening HTML enclosures I suddenly woke up to the fact that I had placed my browser icon (Safari) in the OS X dock approximately 1/2 inch from the position of HTML enclosure icons in incoming mail.
Just drag the icon from the enclosure window to browser icon & the deed is done. The same behavior should exist in OS9 if an alias to the browser were placed at the proper location in the Finder, although the Dock doesn't get covered up by open windows....
