FWIW, there is a sizeable cadre of Mac folks who believe that OS 9.1 is the best version for anyone who is not using it along with OS X. Apparently, most of the stuff in the upgrades beyond 9.1 have to do with OSS X compatibility, according to the cadre. I'm not personally an expert in this area, just passing along opinion.
