Well, I've made the big leap from a Performa 6290 running 8.6 to a new
17" iMac with Panther. Hooked up an ethernet cable between the two,
turned on file sharing on each machine and copied all my files and most
programs from the old to the new with ease.

However -- two glitches with Emailer that I hope someone can help with:

1) When I first ran Emailer on the iMac, I got an error that said "Claris
Emailer could not open the required file "Connections" because an unknown
error (-5000) occurred. Press OK to quit."

I solved this, I thought, by copying over the Claris folder from my
Performa's System Folder and placing it in the OS 9 System folder. For
some reason I had to recreate the Preferences file, but after that it
appeared to work okay.

Then I created my wife's ID on the machine, and tried to show her how to
use Emailer -- same error. I have since adjusted the security both on
the Emailer application folder and the Claris folder to allow read/write
access by all (applying to all levels below the folder), but to no avail.

I can't seem to adjust the privileges on the OS 9 System folder itself -
could that be the issue? How do I do this, as the owner is "system"?
(Sorry to be asking for OS X help - but it's in a just cause.)

2) Much more trivial: I can't seem to modify or add to the system alert
sounds in the Classic environment, which means I can't add the
oh-so-passe "You've Got Mail" sound (or any other sound) for use as the
mail notification sound. Even some of the sounds listed don't seem to
work. I've tried adding back the Monitors and Sounds control panel (and
the related Extension file), but to no avail. Any ideas here? (This is
just a nicety - I'm more concerned about issue #1.)

To be honest, after 3 days with the new iMac, I don't know how much
longer we will use Emailer, as more and more people send mail as HTML and
don't seem to care or be aware of a preference for text e-mail, and AOL
just keeps spewing spam with no end in sight. As these two issues don't
seem to be getting any better, I think we may switch either to Mail or
Entourage (ah, but which?) and bid Emailer a fond farewell. (The
inability to switch OS X users without forcing Classic to quit is also a
pain, so that will limit our desire to use Classic apps over time.)

All for now - with thanks in advance!
