It works in Classic, but OS X apps can not window shade without 3rd party utils. When you double click the title bar like you would to window shade, it shrinks down into the dock instead. I'm still up in the air if I like that more then window shade. I think Window Shade is easier to work with mutliple windows that you keep flipping between (such as if you are cut and pasting data between windows).
