Actually, it is a combination thing. Apple has been pushing out old
software/hardware/ways of doing things faster, because supporting those
things costs money and holds them back from what they want to do in the
future.

But yeah, it is also to sell more hardware.

The one aspect of this Intel deal that is bad for us, is the fact that
Intel wants Apple as much (if not more) then Apple wants Intel. Why?
Because Intel wants to sell more chips, and MS has slowed development and
bloatiness in recent years... meaning WinXP runs just as well on a 5 year
old 400 MHz P3 as it does on a brand new 4 GHz P4... so the PC world is
slowing down on sales, because there isn't a compelling reason to
upgrade. A machine only has to be so fast to handle email, web browsing,
and word processing.

Plus, because there is no profit margin in the PC world, PC vendors are
reluctant to adopt new hardware, and pretty much NEVER before MS supports
it in Windows.

Apple on the other hand LOVES to introduce new toys... and has the profit
margins to support that development. Once Apple does it, it becomes
"cool" and the PC vendors copy it.

So Intel wants Apple so they can push new toys to the world... side
effect to this is, to keep Intel happy, Apple has to be sure to keep
introducing new toys and faster machines. On the surface that sounds
great for us... but when you think about how are they going to sell those
new items if the Mac has been averaging a 5 year life span (with PCs
being a 3 year). Well, Apple has to be sure there is a good reason to
upgrade, that means making things that aren't backwards compatible with
old hardware sooner. That is bad for us as Apple's goal will be to get
the Mac down to a 2-3 year life span.

Just my take on it.
