If you have very low holding torque even at zero speed, the most likely cause is low motor current. The xylotex boards have pots to set the motor current. Are you sure they are set correctly? If I recall correctly there is a test point, you put a meter on it and adjust the pot. The manual has a formula that lets you determine the proper test point voltage based on your motor current specs.
