True for some Mesa cards, but others (like Pico Systems) have fixed 
functions,
like step/dir output, digital input and output, etc.  You select the 
correct driver
(included with the LinuxCNC distribution) and do minor configuring of the
step resolution, desired speeds, etc. in the .ini file and it is ready 
to go.
