Found it, what an evening. The index wire had escaped from the bob terminal and was laying where it could touch the bottom of the bob. And whatever it touched reach back into my encoder and blew a 74ls04. Found a fresh static pad with 8 of them, so a fresh one got plugged in. With all the power off, I tried to get that wire back into the terminal on the bob, but that bob is one with the leaf the screw drives to clamp the wire, and I had no quick and dirty way to reopen the leaf. Jammed it in and held it while tightening the screw, and it tests like its got a solid grip on it. Then I found I had some confusion in the hal file yet, took another 15 minutes to sort that. 2 things. The recommended pid setup winds up like crazy, and takes 2 to 4 seconds to respond to a change in the spindle loading that slows it down. Then it over speeds and takes 10 seconds to settle back to the set speed. I've tried to add some Pgain, but on a velocity to velocity setup thats not working. That uses FF0 and Igain, everything else is zeroed. Some minus FF2 maybe? Got to be a way to stiffen the speed regulation up, a lot. 2. when I put a 10mmx1.5 tap in, even pecking at it, 1/16th of a turn per peck, its stalling the spindle motor at the bottom of the peck by the time its got the makings of 2 threads started, so When I hear the servo chirp, I help it back out of the hole, shut the cut down, and finish the hole with a 22mm open end wrench across the flats of the TTS toolholder, using the loosened in the R8 adapter TTS as a tap holder to tease it into making enough threads to work. At least 3/4". Its 22:45 local time, I'm bushed and one more hole to drill and tap tomorrow. Anybody know where I can find a 10 horse motor for a G0704? :) One the z motor can still lift? (snirk) Thanks Andy, you were as usual, right. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
