Those must cost a LOT! If the material is hard, why not
thread mill it? There are single-row thread mills that can
be used over a range of hole sizes. I've got a 1/4" solid
carbide single row thread mill from Micro-100, probably cost
about $100 today. But, it will do a wide range of thread
pitches, and from anything it can fit into up, in diameter.
I've only used it a few times, but where a tap won't do for
some reason (or you have an oddball thread pitch-diameter
combination) it is great. Takes VERY little power, no need
for spindle sync, but it is a bit slower than tapping.
