One more question. I assumed that the Euro characters were markers
indicating that those particular categories were not synched. You didn't
have Euros in the category names did you? Not that it should matter since
they are still considered custom and need to be added manually on the Palm.

Subject: RE: Palm Sync - Duplicate Categories

So far no luck in reproducing the behavior in which categories are
duplicated. Before continuing, let me explain a little about how syncing
categories works. When synchronizing your Palm with Entourage, the follow
occurs:

* Entourage categories matching default categories on the handheld
will be synchronized
* Entourage categories that do match default categories on the
handheld will be retained in Entourage; therefore if you want to have new
custom categories on the handheld, create, modify, and delete them on the
handheld
* If you apply multiple categories in Entourage, Entourage syncs the
primary category IF a matching category exists on the Palm. If no matching
category exists, the category on the Palm is set to Unfiled.
* If you apply a category on the Palm that does not yet exist in
Entourage, the category will be created in Entourage when you sync.

Given the above, the fact that the "Local" and "Mailing List" categories are
not synchronized with the Palm makes sense. These are custom categories and
should be created on the Palm.

As for the duplicated categories, I would like to understand how you got to
the state you are currently in.

Do you recall how you originally added the categories to your Palm and/or
Entourage? Did you add all the custom categories only to the Palm apps? Did
you add all the custom categories to both Palm and Entourage? When
synchronizing, have you previously added or edited each type of item
(contact, todo, or memo) on the Palm? Did you edit each type of item in
Entourage?

Here's what I tried:
I reset my Palm and started over with fresh Entourage identity (renamed the
original one). Before synching, I manually added the non-default categories
you mention to Entourage (Local, Mailing List, Business, Financial,
Healthcare, Household, and Immigration). On the Palm, I manually added the
non-default categories to the Address Book (Family, Financial, Healthcare,
Household, and Immigration). I also manually added Household to the Palm's
ToDo app. (I figured this might be how you got into the current state.)

I synch'ed once to see if the categories were duplicated. They weren't. I
tried synching after modifying items. So in Entourage, I applied the
Personal category to a contact and the Household category to another
contact. On the Palm I applied the Personal category to the same contact I
applied the Personal category to in Entourage. I applied the Financial
category to a different entry. After synching, the categories were not
duplicated. (I'm looking at the Categories drop-down list.) Note that if you
modify one item on both the Palm and in Entourage, a duplicate of the item
will appear, which is by design.

I also created one each of a task, note, and contact on both Palm and
Entourage and applied one of the non-default categories to each and
synchronized. Still no duplicate categories.

Subject: Palm Sync - Duplicate Categories

Hi,

I just discovered this list today and don't seem to be able to find a FAQ or
archive anywhere so I will ask the question and hopefully no-one will mind.
I have been following the MacFixIt forums pretty religiously as well as this
problem is really beginning to bug me.

I am seeing a consistent problem with duplicate categories. I have the
following categories in Entourage:

EUR Junk EUR
EUR Local EUR
EUR Mailing List EUR
Business
Family
Financial
Healthcare
Household
Immigration
Personal

The categories which start and end with EUR are not synced to the Palm
(wouldn't it be nice if Entourage could enforce this ?).

On my Palm I have the following categories in the Address List:

Business
Family
Financial
Healthcare
Household
Immigration
Personal

and these in the To Do List:

Business
Household
Personal

and these in the Memo Pad:

Business
Personal

After each HotSync I end up with 4 x Business, 2 x Family, 2 x Financial, 2
x Healthcare, 3 x Household, 2 x Immigration, 4 x Personal. With each
HotSync the number of categories increases at the same rate. If you think
about it a category is being created in Entourage for each category in each
application on the Palm. None of the existing categories are being used.

Also, when I create something in Entourage it goes into the correct category
on the Palm but if I create something on the Palm it ends up in one of the
newly created categories.

Is this a bug ?

Nick
