Your solutions to this problem would bring back the undesirable behavior.
Remember that not everyone uses the preview pane. People not using the
preview pane would _always_ have an incoming message open just to read it,
and very well could have selected text just to copy it. It would be wrong
of Erage to assume that this user was mistakenly trying to edit the message
when they hit delete. Erage should delete the message just as it does with
the preview pane.
I guess I just hate it when computers try to protect me from myself. "Are
you sure you want to shutdown." Yeah! That's why I clicked that button.
