It's huge. A likely candidate for disk corruption.

Yet another reason for frequent (daily if your data is important) backups on
a different medium. Not all crashes are recoverable. Look ahead for possible
disasters, not back after the fact. It won't help this time, but it will the
next.

Another temporary solution, to cover you between backups, is to set your
email program to keep incoming mail on the server for several days so a
fresh download is possible.
