Unfortunately not the case. Simply copying and pasting a custom icon over the existing Office application icons was enough to cause the update to fail.
I believe the issue here is less the pasting of a custom icon over existing
icons, but possibly of replacing an icon a custom one using a tool like
Resedit...
I think when people start messing with an app, all bets SHOULD be off.
People may have different definitions as to what behavior should be called “mucking,” but I certainly wouldn’t have included pasting custom icons in that category. I now know better (at least vis-à-vis MS apps), and will always update on fresh copies in the future.
