Okay, but as I saw it the SR updater simply moved the old defunct copy to
the trash and replaced it with a new one, no? Ergo the modified app is no
longer an issue. 

(I expect I'm wrong and it really does feel silly arguing the toss about
this as it installed perfectly for me.)
