Deborah, One thing it could be is the Database Daemon -- that is the background app that facilitates access to the Entourage database. Have you tried logging out and back in again? Or in the event that doesn't work, restarting altogether? (there are ways to kill the daemon without restarting, but it requires using terminal). Anyway, I would try these options. If they don't work, then you can rebuild (hold down option during launch --- same as 2001). You can rebuild under X just fine (as long as your mail DB isn't over 2 GB).
