It puts the Group name in the To line on your own screen as a sort of placeholder, and makes a BCC header with the names of all the group members, and a blank To header in the actual message. I've kept this to myself for while, but i must say that I'm mystified that the developers have said they're following an RFC protocol that forbids sending messages with no To or Cc header (although this RFC has been debated by some people), so you can't do this for yourself in the address box, and then they turn around and do exactly that in implementing Groups/Hide Addresses.
