Steve probably has felt the same way since Windows 3.1; and having met some
the original Xerox Star researchers (and gotten a demo of the Star system
early on) I imagine there are similar feelings there as well.

As far as Entourage is concerned, there are three or four Macintosh mail
products that existed well before Outlook that Outlook clearly borrowed
heavily from. Quickmail (or was it Quicklook?) for one. In fact I wish
Entourage had the template capability that Quickmail had, it was really
nice. This was not a boiler plate template capability, but the ability to
completely control the layout and contents of the message pane, including
adding checkboxes, pictures, multiple text fields, selectors, and other
controls when sending and receiving mail. Very handy to use when building
workflows.

Messenger, iChat, and other instant messaging are not original either.
Anybody remember VAX 11 Phone? In some ways that application was better than
any of the existing instant messaging clients we have today - for one thing,
it was true peer to peer, not this server based system we have today.

When it really comes down to it, there is not a lot that is really original
in Entourage. In fact, I cannot think of any truly original feature.
However, it is a good packaging of existing ideas, and that is an
accomplishment.
