Jan, I would dearly love to use SMTP AUTH with Earthlink, as that is my main ISP. I've been in the situation you have described (in a hotel with broadband access, unable to send mail via Earthlink) where it would have been extremely useful. So...
You say you put "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" as the send mail server. Is that "@" sign right, or should it be a period: "smtpauth.earthlink.net"? Another related question: There are two situations where I have gotten the message about relaying being denied. 1. Attempting to send mail via Earthlink's SMTP server while connected through another service, like a hotel's broadband connection. 2. Attempting to send mail via _someone else's_ SMTP server that allows SMTP authorization (like mac.com's) while connected through Earthlink. Earthlink refuses to relay the message. I'm assuming that your solution works only for #1 and not for #2. Do you know? On or near 9/10/02 3:04 PM, Jan Martel at [EMAIL PROTECTED] observed: > After letting my brain sit for awhile, and reading the messages from people > here (especially Steve's suggestion to re-input ID and password) it occurred > to me to go the Rules --> Accounts and try re-entering the information there > instead of by accepting 'rage's offer to re-enter as I was trying to send > mail. I went to my default account and changed back to > [EMAIL PROTECTED] as the send mail server. Then I clicked on the "click > here for advanced sending options" button and checked the server requires > authentication box, but instead of leaving it at "use the receive mail stuff > (of course 'rage doesnt say stuff :-))" I checked "log on as" and put my > entire email address in the ID box and my normal password in the password > box. That worked - at least I hope it did - I sent myself a test message and > it went through.
