It's smtpauth.earthlink.net

Jan is correct and they support SMTP AUTH now, which means that yes, you will be able to work in this scenario (provided the hot’s broadband provider isn’t blocking port 25 as well :-(

This has not changed.
Here is the announcement that Jan was referring to:

International Roaming
Expatriates. Business travelers. Hostel-loving backpackers. We're talking to you. EarthLink's International Roaming service lets you use your Internet account on the road. Even if that road leads to Europe or Asia.
A few things to know before you go:
1. You don't need a special registration or additional subscription in order to sign up for International Roaming, but you will need to add smtpauth.earthlink.net as the SMTP server in your email program* (for example, EarthLink MailBox, Outlook, Outlook Express, or Eudora).
2. Internet access will be billed to your account at $0.15 per minute in addition to your flat, monthly rate.
3. A few countries don't cost extra because they are already included in your flat, monthly rate. You won't be billed $0.15 per minute extra when you dial into EarthLink locally from Canada, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or any of the 50 United States.
4. Find Internet access numbers for the country of your choice. Select a country from the menu and click Next. All available dial-up numbers in that country will be displayed. Print out the list, and don't forget to pack it.
*Need help configuring your email program? Please read our "How Do I Sign Up For International Roaming?" hints.
Of course, wanderlust doesn't pay the phone bill. Hang on to a few traveler's checks, and learn more about phone systems outside the United States.
Planning an adventure in the continental U.S.? Over 7,500 local access numbers ought to cover it .
In my limited testing it appears that you need to authenticate with the following information:
SMTP server: smtpauth.earthlink.net
username: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
password: Earthlink Password
