The fact remains that my database was corrupted after the remove/restore,
but not before.  If the database was not changed, how was that possible?

I can only think of two possibilities:

(a) My database was corrupted before the remove/restore *and* one or more of
the replaced applications were themselves corrupted in a way which made the
corrupted database appear uncorrupted.  Seems like a stretch.

(b) The replaced installation had a different configuration or version state
*and* this caused Entourage to interpret my database structures differently,
or make adjustments to the database on first opening.  Remember that it is
not uncommon for an app to check the version state of a database on first
open, and make adjustments to the DB if needed.  My original install of
Office X had multiple updates, and then SR1.  My replacement install had
only SR1, which was supposed to include all the older updates.  But were
these installs totally equivalent?  I don't know.
