I was able to update after some problems. Here is what happened:
1. Update complained and had moved Microsoft Component Plugins to trash.
2. I put this file back.
3. I did a chown -R and chmod -R 777 to the Microsoft Office X application
folder. I had to repeat steps 1 and 2 as this didn't work.
4. I ran Disk Utility, and it repaired many permissions.
5. Ran Office Update again and it worked.
