Usually, when Entourage will not open, it¹s a problem with Entourage and/or
preferences. In your case since you have not used Entourage , this indicates
a problem with your install of Office or on the base OS files that Office
uses.

1. use "Remove Office" located in Additional Tools folder In Office 2004.
You¹ll need your registration key when installing in #4.
2. Apply the latest Apple combo updater- this will overwrite any files that
have become corrupted. Incremental updaters do not go back and overwrite
other files. Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re
applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install. Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo
Update (PPC)

3. Restart and run Repair Permissions
4. Install Office from the CD and Update fully.
