For whatever reason, that did allow me (so-far) to run with the two-week old
backup (and Office is now updated to 12.1.1). But the newer version of the
database still had the unrepairable corruption of the Contacts. And I had
done a lot of contact updating since then so I'm out a couple of hours of
work reentering all the changes/additions.

Frankly, this has me very concerned about the stability of Entourage. As
someone who is very technical, most other reports of problems I could
dismiss as "user error". But not this one. I have a backup strategy that
should let me recover from just about anything. But not something like this
where the database is corrupt for a while but doesn't show it until later.

Meanwhile yesterday, I was setting up (Apple) Mail (and iCal and Address
Book). While there are a few things Entourage can do better (multiple
schedules, send-only accounts, custom headers), I'm not sure it's worth the
risk.
