Yes, that's what the two-week old backup I restored was (I use Retrospect so
Time Machine offers me little I don't already have).

You also need your backup in different formats.

I'll disagree with you there. Backing up like that (and those aren't really
backups, those are just attempt to preserve the data in alternate forms)
shows a basic distrust of the ability of the software to protect the data.
The fact that Rebuild is taking the corrupted but openable database and
making it unopenable also says there is something wrong in the rebuild
process.

I'm protecting against a lot of risks: inadvertent deletion, loss of the
disk, loss of the computer, even loss of our home with offsite backup of
critical data. In there also is loss to data corruption that is immediately
detectable. A risk that is not being protected against is corruption that
occurs at some point but is not detected until some long time later at which
point the data has been extensively changed and at which point an
uncorrupted backup no longer exists. I don't keep backups forever. Even the
two week old backup is of limited value due to the lost changes. Fortunately
I use IMAP for mail so for all practical purposes, the mail in the Entourage
database is really a backup of what's on the mail server. The important data
at risk of loss by Entourage is the contacts and the calendar.
