Unknown error 16001 occurred. Still 8 invisible contacts. So I am to presume that repair and rebuild database is an email routine and not for contacts.
Looks like I need to create a new identity with no contacts and import/rebuild everything. Apple Mail was of interest but for one thing -- they do not offer a delay when showing messages as read. Simply touching a message marks it as read and that doesn't work for my email habits. On the plus side is Time Machine backups of many small files is much more efficient.
