Thanks for the reply Dave. I will be using "what I have" but I will be forever
curious as to the precise exposure duration.
I will be using two 550ex units to illuminate the birds and two additional Nikon
SB-28's to illuminate the background.

Last summer I used high speed FP flash with shutter speeds of 1/8000. It was a
technolgical "tour de force" in that I got tack-sharp, well exposed birds but an
inky black background. I expected that mind but the slides do not project well
and do not scan well either even though they are killers under a loupe on a
light table. I have to fill in the background and wish to use my Nikon units to
complement the 550's.

What's with the "pre-flash" in ETTL mode? I understand its function but I can
not "see" it. Either it is very faint or it comes at such a short time before
the main flash I can not distinguish it. I ask because it is imperative the
preflash does not trigger the SB28's (slaved on SU4's) prematurely. Is it
visible? How much time elapses between preflash and main flash? Can the eye
detect it or is it too short a time between pre and main?
