I am not ready to sell the Nikon units . . . need 'em for other stuff. One or two
Canon lights, cheaper than the 550's, might be "do-able" but the 420EX seems not
to be listed in the B&H catalog for Summer 2000. In any event, it seems only the
550EX is compatible with the ST-E2? I do not require much power from the units
but do require them to work with the ST-E2. It's getting complicated now. Could I
use two 550's triggered by the ST-E2 and an additional two cheaper lights (200E
or 220EX) wired to the EOS3 . . . all at the same time . . . and still have
ETTL? What would I use to hold the additional units? The 550's come with that
neat little plastic base to use when the flashes are off-camera. Sorry for all
the questions . . .

Ahh . . . Thank you, Julian. This is the information I was looking for. Not for
the 550 but very interesting nonetheless.

Thank you Rafal. In my tests I was watching the flashes from the front. The
preflash was not distiguishable from the mains. No doubt it triggered the Nikon
units prematurely and my background will be dark when I get the test shots back.
It appears I will have to use totally manual settings to prevent the preflash if
I am to use the Nikons. I recall now that the preflash was indeed visible in the
viewfinder when I was using ETTL last summer.
