The 420EX speedlites cost $220 (at a certain reputable US mail-order
store ;-) and will slave with the 550EX. See my web page about Canon

I don't know if the EOS 3 will do E-TTL with the 550EX (shoe-mounted) if
you have other flashes wired to the PC connector, although I suspect it
will. However, the 200E and 220EX have no manual power settings, so they
will always fire full power when connected to the PC connector - and
could cause ghosting even for background illumination. See my web page

I have purchased cheap plastic "shoes" with 1/4-20 threads on the bottom
for about $5 apiece at swap meets. I prefer these to the "official"
550EX stands for holding the speedlites upside-down.
