I saw an osciloscope graph of a (Canon) flash discharge... its not a very
"steep" curve, so flash "duration" might be difficult to define.  Canon
has (in the past) stated 1/700 second for a full power burst, so you
might do the math from there.

FP flash shouldn't be necessary (and is a waste of power), low power
flash durations are certainly less that 1/8000 second.   You could sell
your Nikon speedlites and buy a couple of 420EX's to illuminate the
background ...and still use E-TTL flash.
