The camera's automatic white balance is remarkable. Of course, this
is something that's dramatically different with a digital camera, as
you can change WB and ISO settings on the fly, making virtual film
changes as it were.--

For the "digitally-challenged" amongst us (me!) how does this work? The ISO
settings business that is.
Do the images become noticebly "worse" as you go from lower to higher ISO
settings? What happens to the file sizes? The entire concept of ISO seems
inapplicable to digital. I just don't get it but am sure interested in the D30.
What's the downside here in going from a low to a high ISO setting in digital?
