Well the white balance is basically a built in color filter. Instead of
having to use a filter on the lens or flash when shooting in places with
colored lights such has flourescents or the nasty lights they use in high
school gymnasiums.
The cameras don't really need shutter speeds or ISO's but they work with
them for ease of use for photographers, and so you'll still be able to use
your handheld lightmeters. Basically it's not all that different than the
results you get with film. Instead of it getting grainy has you go higher
in ISO, you get noise, especially in the shadows. From what I've seen and
read, the D30 is probably the best when it comes to reducing this. There's
also programs available to remove the noise. My local canon rep showed me
some 30sec exposures he did, and using Canon's software to clean them up.
Pretty amazing stuff.
