if the camera did not have a shutter the sensor would continually be in a
saturated situation due to the light incident upon it.  the sensor starts
from "empty" as it were so any charge generated in a true reflection of the
image one wishes to record.  the "thud" is more to do with the reflex
mirror, but i agree the D30 sounds nice.  :o>

i was out ealier taking some pictures using a 30second exposure, quite windy
though so not the sharpest pictures, but they are reasonably noise free.
