I thought I had that on my 1000F... I will verify. But IIRC, it's only in
some modes like the ACTION PIC mode. But anyway, I noticed sometimes that
it wasn't very accurate (pretty much like what you described ;-).

I have it on my 50E. You can kind of turn it on and of by choosing the
appropriate AF mode, i.e. it's off in One-Shot mode, but on in the 2
others that can follow a moving subject.
