Gary:
I am sure someone with more expertise than myself in using
Canon's flash system
will
reply but I think you are, respectfully and in agreement
with yourself,
confused.
I too fell into the trap of trying to use the 500/EOS3 in Av
mode. It makes
little sense
until I understood what the system was trying to do. Yes, Av
mode with flash is
not what
you would initially expect. Tv mode seems perfectly
straightforward though, and
identical to
Nikon. The body, in manual mode, and the flash in E-TTL
gives you everything you
could
desire in flexibility . . . including fully automatic
in-camera flash exposure
control. Seems a bit
paradoxical . . . put the camera in manual for fully
automatic flash exposure
determination
but that's the way it is.
Incidentally, while not especially expert in using flash, I
do own, and use,
both Canon 550/ST-E2 and Nikon
SB-28/SU4 combinations. I do not find the Nikons to be, in
any way, superior to
the Canons. In fact,
Canon's ability to to use FP mode in wireless slave
configuration is actually a
significant advantage
in my particular application.
By all means switch to Nikon if you prefer . . . . but I
think this is the worst
reason imaginable to
do so. Nikon flash used to be superior to Canon. With the
introduction of
Canon's wireless system
the situation seems reversed. Put the body in manual, select
your shutter speed
and aperture, and you will be
fine. Canon has a great flash system now.
