Again, apologies, *I* am the one suffering from
confusion (or at least a poor memory). Now that I've
got the camera with me, I can correct this.

You're right. Once you've pressed the asterisk button,
"FEL" blinks briefly where the shutter speed is
usually displayed in the finder, and the "can do it"
indication in the finder is that the ready-light
indication (arrow-headed lightning bolt) stays on
solid. If the E-TTL algorithm determines the manual
exposure setting you've selected (including flash
exposure compensation) *won't* work, the "arrowbolt"
blinks.

The nice thing is that the camera remembers the flash
exposure for 15 seconds, during which time if you dial
in a speed and aperture that will work, the arrow-bolt
stops blinking. The green confimation light on the
flash unit comes on *after* the shutter is tripped.
Which gives you the warm fuzzy you did everything
right.

And it's how my ElanII and 380ex work also.

I'll stand by my statement that it is quick and easy.
I should have the camera in my lap when I *write*
about it, too... :-P
